DORASHT Antique Persian Rug

19th-century Persian Dorasht rugs were woven in the Khorassan district of Northeast Persia, primarily for local and European nobility. These high-quality weavings follow the legacy of the East Persian Court tradition dating back to the Safavid era. As they were the least produced of antique City carpet styles, they are exceptionally scarce. This sophisticated, earthen-hued carpet has come to us in wonderful, heavier pile condition. Its soft terra-cotta red field is covered with large shield medallions, each bearing a finely rendered fruiting tree bearing saffron-orange pomegranates, a traditional symbol of fertility, abundance, and divine blessing. Tiny flower clusters adorn the spaces around the medallions, adding a textural complexity to the bold composition. The shifting sizes of the cameo-like medallions are partly due to a diagonal arrangement, but also to the master weaver’s preference for asymmetry and variability, which add depth and fascination. In a contrasting rhythmic variation, the main border is adorned with two parallel meandering vines and Shah Abbas palmettes, arranged in a clever mirror image. The timeless beauty, unique design, etched clarity, and rare earth-toned palette ensure this absorbing 150-year-old Dorasht will make a foundational contribution to the ambiance of an important setting.
